Empty Bowls is made possible by the generous donations of over 40 talented local artists. Each bowl is a unique work of art that takes hours and days to complete.

Step 1: Shaping the Bowls

The clay is prepped, centered on the wheel, shaped into a bowl, and the surfaces are smoothed.

Step 2: Drying and Firing

Once the bowl is completely dry, fire it in a kiln at a low temperature (called bisque firing) to harden the clay and prepare it for glazing.

Step 3: Glazing and Painting

Apply pottery glaze to the bowl using a brush or dipping method. Allow the glaze to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 4: Final Firing

Fire the bowl in the kiln again at a higher temperature to fuse the glaze to the clay and achieve the final finish.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once the bowl has cooled, inspect it for any imperfections and sand or polish as needed. Your pottery bowl is now ready to use and enjoy!

Step 5: Transporting the Bowls

All the bowls are carefully sorted, boxed, and loaded onto the NourishMKE van for transport – on their way to the event!
